Hundreds of people turned up in Canterbury this week to watch the city’s Christmas lights switch on.
EastEnders actress Rita Simmons, who will be playing the wicked queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in this years pantomime at the Marlowe Theatre, was joined by fellow pantomime cast members to switch the lights on in St Georges street.
The event started at 5pm and lasted until 7pm. During the event there was a variety of entertainment including live music, a variety of singing acts and a snow machine, getting the crowd into the Christmas spirit. The lights were switched on at 6.45pm after Rita Simmons led a countdown after joining her cast members on stage, for a brief, but entertaining performance.
Charlotte Scannell, 19, from Surrey, attended the event in St George’s Street Said, “I feel the event tonight highlighted Canterbury as a city, there was a lot going on to keep you entertained until the switch on.”
Miss Scannell attended the switch on with her flatmate Katie Lewis who said, “My favourite part was the countdown and seeing all the lights for the first time, now when we are walking back in the dark, the streets will be lit up”.
The Switch on itself was organised and paid for by businesses in Canterbury through the Canterbury Council Business Improvement District (BID).
